A performer and music educator, Emma Barker is a classical violinist from Prince Frederick, Maryland. She started playing the violin at the age of nine through her school's music program and continued playing music in this program until the end of high school before attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
Emma graduated in May of 2016 from the Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor's in Music Education. There, she was elected Vice President of Berklee's collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and co-founded the Berklee Music Ed Yoga and Mindfulness Club. At Berklee, she played in several mixed styles ensembles as well as the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra, the Classical String Chamber Music Ensemble, the Advanced Conducting Seminar Orchestra, and the Music Ed Concert Choir. Emma studied violin with Sandy Kott, Julianne Lee, Jason Anick, and Simon Shaheen, with a focus in classical, gypsy jazz, and Middle Eastern music. In Spring 2015, she represented Berklee as a Collegiate Ambassador at the Massachusetts Music Educators Association All State Conference and Exhibition.
During the Spring 2016 semester, Emma completed her student teaching with 650 hours of field experience in the Newton Public Schools in Newton, Massachusetts under the guidance of her cooperating teacher, Caleb Cutler. Emma's practicum included teaching beginning 4th and 5th grade strings at Mason-Rice, Bowen, Zervas, Countryside, and Memorial-Spaulding elementary schools, as well as orchestra, choir, and general music at Oak Hill Middle School. General music units included music literacy, music history, music technology, and guitar. During her student teaching, Emma was awarded the Most Promising Future Music Educator Award from the Berklee College of Music at the Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-State Conference.
Currently, Emma is in her seventh year of teaching K-5 general, choral, and instrumental music at the Burr School in Newton, Massachusetts. She also coordinates and directs a spring musical for 5th grade students, and has directed The Sound of Music, The Lion King, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in years past. Emma teaches private string and woodwind lessons after school through the Newton Music Lesson Extension Program, as well as around the Greater Boston area.
