Every 5th grader participates in a weekly 45 minute chorus rehearsal. In 5th grade, students begin to move past the basics of singing to learn more complex two and three part harmonies, how to use common vowel shapes and phrasing, singing with dynamics, and practicing conducting patterns in both simple and compound meters. Students learn songs to perform at the winter concert, spring musical, and moving on ceremony at the end of the year.
At the beginning of each chorus class, students listen to other choirs and vocalists and discuss their listening experiences. We then do several physical and vocal warm ups before working on learning their repertoire for the rest of the rehearsal. 5th graders are given the opportunity to lead and choose warm ups, as well as make thoughtful suggestions of music to learn.
